SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University has been named the "University of the Year" in the Greater Alleghenies Region by the American Red Cross.
The University was honored at the region's annual "Celebrating Champions" meeting June 5 at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh. The GAR presented 49 awards.
SRU was nominated for its five successful blood drives that collected more than 700 pints of blood.
Kraig Kesner, the region's donor recruitment representative, nominated the University for the honor.
The drives were organized by SRU's Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, AmeriCorps program students and the SRU Red Cross Club. Other clubs and organizations signed on as partners for individual drives.
Brian Boyle, a blood recipient and donor, triathlete and author of "Iron Heart," and John Hagins, chief executive officer of the Greater Alleghenies Blood Services Region, were the luncheon speakers.
The Red Cross' Greater Alleghenies Region serves hospitals, patients and blood donors in a 100-county area in Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, and also supports blood needs experienced by patients elsewhere in hospitals served through Red Cross Blood Services.
