'Pioneer Day Celebration' scheduled
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – A "Pioneer Day Celebration" showing what it may have been like to be a settler in western Pennsylvania will be offered from noon to 5 p.m., June 16, at Slippery Rock University's Old Stone House.
Butter churning, candlemaking, sauerkraut cooking and discussions of pioneer dietary habits will be offered throughout the afternoon at the most recognized landmark in Butler County. Visitors will be asked to lend-a-hand.
Historic cooking will take place throughout the day, along with blacksmithing and flint-and-steel demonstrations.
Living history interpreters will offer talks about the day-to-day life of a pioneer. Frontier travel will be discussed.
The Old Stone House will be open at 10 a.m. for guided tours.
The public event carries a suggested donation of $3 per person or $5 per family.
The museum is located in northern Butler County at the intersection of routes 8, 528 and 173, just south of Slippery Rock
Aaron Cowan, SRU assistant professor of history, is the museum's curator.
