Faculty, Guest Artist Dance Concert features wide range of works

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The choreography and dance moves of six Slippery Rock University dance faculty and 22 SRU students will be on display when SRU offers its annual Faculty and Guest Artist Dance Concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Miller Auditorium. Doug Varone, an award-winning choreographer from New York City, will also present "Of the Earth Far Below."

Andy Hasenplfug, SRU dance department staff musician, will present a musical performance as well.

"The concert will show the diversity of our department," said Jennifer Keller, professor of dance. "It gives our students the chance to perform, and it gives faculty a chance to work on their choreography."

The program will include the works of faculty members Nora Ambrosio, Thom Cobb, Teena Custer, Nola Nolen Holland, Ursula Payne, Jaya Mani and Jennifer Keller.

Ambrosio will present solo choreography performed by Krysta White, a dance major from New Castle.

Cobb will present "Let's Get Together," a vintage swing dance. This work will be in the repertory of the Rock Dance Co. for performances at local schools, community events and civic organizations, and was made possible by a 2010-2011 grant from the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Faculty Professional Development Council received by Keller.

Keller will present the results of her spring 2010 repertory class that focused on the essence of partnering. In "Molly," set to a classical piano score by Erik Satie, dance major Molly Hanlon of McKeesport gets lifted and does not set foot on the floor for the next six minutes. "Duet" will explore partnering with and without touch and invites the dancers to invent some of the partnering movements.

Mani will present "Bharatanatyam," a classical eastern-Indian dance form.

Nolen Holland will presents two duets, performed back-to-back by Amber Allgyer, a dance major from Leola; Bennen Cooper, a dance major from Clarendon; Alicia Garity, a dance major from Pittsburgh; and Ashley Kostelnik, a dance major from North Huntingdon.

Payne will perform her original choreography "In Her Solitude: Lest We Forget," a powerful solo inspired by the life of her grandmother.

Custer will close the concert with "The Get Down Gang," which was cited last summer by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as one of the leading groups keeping hip hop alive in Pittsburgh.
