SRU extends Campus Climate Survey

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - With a response rate of nearly 20 percent, the Campus Community Climate Survey advisory committee has elected to extend the survey deadline as a way of gathering even more responses.

Robert Smith, SRU president, recommended the climate assessment project. "For those who have already taken the survey, we say 'Thank you,'" he said.

"This survey is important to each of us. By completing the survey, we offer the entire campus, faculty, staff and students, the opportunity to exercise their voice in setting the future of the University. We urge everyone to take the survey. By extending the survey we allow more voices to be heard," Smith said.

The online, confidential survey is available at: http://online.survey.psu.edu/sru.

"The survey asks 'What your experience has been like at Slippery Rock University?' We want to know from those on campus their feelings about our campus community - our culture - and how it has been great, not-so-great, or indifferent to and for you," Jessamine Montero, senior officer for diversity and inclusion, said.

The survey only takes about 20 minutes to complete. "Because this is the community we live, work and play in, we hope those taking the survey will agree that it is time well spent," she said.

"SRU has come a long way in creating a caring campus community and has become more diverse and inclusive, however, we know that we still need to do so much more," Montero said. "Sharing your experiences will help us figure out what more we need to do; what directions we need to go; how we become even more caring and supportive for all of us, individually and collectively."

Survey results will be reported in meetings throughout spring semester and available to all members of the campus community.

"Survey participants will also be able to learn about the results online from the SRU Web page. The entire campus community will be asked to help make decisions on identifying goals, based on survey results," Montero said.

"The purpose of the survey is to provide important information about the climate at Slippery Rock University and to enable us to improve the environment for working, living and learning. The information will be used in conjunction with other data to provide the University with an inclusive view of our institution," she said.

Montero said the survey's URL is external to campus and those signing up for prizes after taking the survey will have their information stripped from their responses so the answers cannot be linked back to them. No individuals will be identifiable in the survey results.

Those completing the survey have the option of entering a drawing for prizes, including half-hour full body massages; SRU sweatshirts; CNC WonderWash carwashes; Red Rock Falls Gift Certificates; Wal-Mart Gift Certificates; Rocky's Pizza Party Packages; free lunches at the University Club; free Coffee-on-Campus plans; and a variety of desserts, meals and customized cake orders packages, compliments of AVI Fresh, the campus contract food supplier.

Nichole DeFeo, a secondary education major from Ford City, and Maria Mullin, clerk typist in the Office of Multicultural Development, each won an Amazon Kindle in the survey's first prize giveaway.
