SRU breaks ground for $38-million Student Center; opens in 2012
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - With hardhats in place and shovels at-the-ready officials broke ground last Friday for Slippery Rock University's $38-million student center.
The facility, which was proposed and voted on by students, is being built on land formerly used for residence halls. It is being paid for through student fees.

The ceremony was headed by Constance Foley, SRU vice president for student life, who thanked all of those who supported the concept and for those involved in the design.
Jeremiah Rosser, president of SRU's Student Government Association and a business management major from Cannonsburg, thanked his predecessors for their work in bringing the building to fruition. He said that two campuswide student votes were needed, both giving overwhelming support to construction. "It is absolutely awesome that it is going to happen. SRU has a great support system for all of its students."
He said that in addition to the SGA Bookstore, the new Student Center will offer offices and meeting rooms for campus organizations. A foodcourt will include a Quaker Steak and Lube franchise and a Starbucks. It will also be Wi-Fi equipped.
Bulldozers and backhoes have been at the construction site preparing the ground for the actual construction.
Mascaro Construction, based in Pittsburgh, is the general contractor for the project.
