SRU kicks off annual SECA drive

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The annual State Employee Combined Appeal is under way across Pennsylvania and Slippery Rock University has a goal of raising $28,000.

Mark O'Connor, employment and classification manager in SRU's Office of Human Resources, is heading the campus drive that continues through Oct. 22.

"This year's campaign theme is 'Give Hope Today, Build a Better Tomorrow," he said.

The SECA drive was established in 1977 as the only charitable campaign allowed by the commonwealth of Pennsylvania in all of its state offices.

"This year, there are nearly 1,300 agencies participating in the campaign," said Bill Ruud, SECA chair for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

All SRU employees have received e-mail messages from President Robert Smith and Lynn Motyl, assistant vice president for human resources, announcing and supporting the drive.

"Through SECA, you have a wonderful opportunity to make a tax-deductible contribution to help people lead more productive and fulfilling lives. Last year, our campus campaign generated more than $21,000 in SECA donations, Smith said. "One way to keep your contribution dollars in the community is to support our local United Way. The designation code for Butler County United Way is 4612-0000. Slippery Rock University maintains a seat on the Butler County United Way Board of Directors."

Rudd challenged PASSHE employees to "stretch the goals again by 5 percent this year."

PASSHE's 2010 SECA goal is $400,000.

"I know that these are incredibly difficult times to ask people to give money, but, as you know, these are also the times when many more people are in need. Our employees have been blessed with stability in our jobs and in our compensation. It is an important time to help in any ways that you can," Rudd said.
