SRU students train as CERT members
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University Community Fellows, members of the University's AmeriCorps program, along with graduate assistants and staff recently participated in a two-day certification workshop detailing Pandemic and Disaster Preparedness for Pennsylvania's Special Populations and the Community Emergency Response Team program conducted by the Lawrence County Department of Public Safety/Citizen's Corp. and the EMS Lawrence County Council.
During National Preparedness Month, marked each September, community fellows are available to discuss Emergency Preparedness with SRU classes, organizations and departments. Reference materials for distribution in classes are available in SRU's Center for Student Involvement and Leadership's Office, located in the University Union.
As CERT members, the AmeriCorps students will be better prepared to respond to and cope with the aftermath of disaster. These members will be able to provide immediate assistance to victims in their area, organize spontaneous volunteers who have not had the training and collect disaster intelligence that will assist professional responders with prioritization and allocation of resources following a disaster, according to Laurel Dagnon, program director for SRU's AmeriCorps program.
"The purpose of the training of community fellows is twofold: first to assist western Pennsylvania communities while students at SRU during a disaster, and, secondly to be a valuable resource for their communities after graduation," she said.
The AmeriCorps Community Fellows program is administered by the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership.
