service-learning workshop
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University and the Community Fellows AmeriCorps program will host a "Supporting Service Learning Through AmeriCorps" workshop in conjunction with PennSERVE, the Governor's Office of Citizens Service.
The 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 23 program is in the Russell Wright Alumni House and Conference Center.
The workshop is designed for state and national AmeriCorps members along with VISTA members, program staff, host-site supervisors and western Pennsylvania-based community partners interested in implementing or expanding service-learning in their programs.
Joan Liptrot, an expert in service learning with the Institute for Global Education and Service-Learning, will facilitate the workshop. Liptrot has extensive experience working with national service grantees.
The IGESL is a non-profit training organization that creates service-learning programs and initiates activity-based education in collaboration with schools and organizations around the world.
PennSERVE, the Governor's Office of Citizens Service, seeks to build strong communities through grassroots citizen involvement and commitment. The program, open to 50 participants, will offer ways of promoting volunteerism and community service through service learning opportunities.
The Community Fellows AmeriCorps program at SRU is part of the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership. The program offers a number of service-learning opportunities for both SRU students and faculty. More than 800 SRU students annually serve western Pennsylvania communities through service-learning opportunities. A number of faculty receive mini-grants enabling them to better integrate service learning into their classes.
