SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University will host the ninth annual National Drowning Prevention Symposium in Pittsburgh April 26-27.
Events, which include a pre-conference workshop April 25, will be at the Sheraton at Station Square in Pittsburgh.
The symposium showcases the best-of-the-best in drowning prevention programs, strategies and products so that individuals and organizations from across the nation can work together to maximize their efforts to prevent injuries and deaths due to drowning, said Robert Ogoreuc, SRU assistant professor of physical education and program coordinator.
The conference theme is "A Confluence of Water Safety: Prevention, Outreach and Action" and will serve to remind those in the field that it requires a multi-faceted approach to truly make advancements in drowning prevention, he said.
Speakers include John Malatak, chief of program operations, boating and safety division of the U.S. Coast Guard and a 1992 Lifesaving and Water Safety Hall of Fame inductee, will delivery the keynote address "We've Learned the Strategies-How Do We Get Results?" Frank Pia, a nationally recognized expert in water safety, will present "Maximizing the effectiveness of drowning prevention efforts through targeted approaches."
Plenary presentations will include John Cruzat, diversity specialist with USA Swimming, presenting "Diversity in aquatics: The call to save lives through action and partnerships"; Julie Gilchrist, medical epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, offering "A global perspective on drowning prevention"; Kathleen Reilly, public affairs specialist with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, presenting "How can our states benefit from VGB grants for passing barrier code legislation?"; and Jack Wagner, Pennsylvania's 50th elected auditor general, offering "How can government support drowning prevention and the importance of lifeguards?"
The pre-conference sessions include a pool operator "fusion" course offered in collaboration between the National Swimming Pool Foundation and NDPA, an open water rescue course offered in collaboration with the New Jersey State Police and NDPA, and a lifeguard operations and management course offered in collaboration with Lifesaving Resources and NDPA.
