SRU's Gault Art Gallery readies
annual Student Juried Exhibition

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's art department opens its annual Student Juried Exhibition at 5 p.m. Monday in the Martha Gault Art Gallery located in Maltby Center.

He exhibition features 33 student works. Awards for best in show and first, second and third place juror's awards will be presented at 5:30 p.m.

Nearly 125 works were submitted for consideration for the exhibition that continues through April 16.

This year's juror was Kate Lydon, director of exhibitions at the Pittsburgh Society of Contemporary Craft where she oversees installation of exhibitions mounted at SCC's main Strip District gallery and its One Mellon satellite gallery in downtown Pittsburgh.

Lydon participates in all decisions regarding exhibition development, selection of work, touring of exhibitions and development of public programming.

She received dual degrees in art history and French at Denison University and her master's degree from the Archival, Museum and Editing Program at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

With more than 21 years of experience at SCC, she offers a working knowledge of the contemporary craft field, artist and process and public education about craft. Prior to joining SCC, Lydon served as registrar for The Frick Art and Historical Center in Pittsburgh and exhibitions coordinator at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.

She has participated on jury panels for the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Individual Artist Fellowship/Crafts; Greater Columbus Arts Council, Individual Artist Fellowship Selection; Ohio Craft Museum, Columbus, Ohio, Best of 2004 Show and Tamarack, ACC Southeast Region Spotlight 2004 Exhibition.

Lydon joined the board of governors of Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tenn., in 2006.

Sean Macmillan, assistant professor of art at SRU and Gault Gallery director, organized the show.

Gallery hours are noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
