SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's Institute for Community, Service-Learning and Nonprofit Leadership and the SRU AmeriCorps Program have the names of 75 local children in need of help for the upcoming holiday and they are looking for people to "adopt" them as part of Project Christmas Elf.
Launched in 1989, the annual program has provided holiday gifts to thousands of needy children in the Butler County region during the Christmas holiday. Names are supplied by the Salvation Army office in Butler.
The program urges campus offices, departments, individuals, organizations and clubs to "adopt" a child for the holidays. This year, the program sponsors are asking that $100 be spent on each adopted child.
"This is another project that allows the University to demonstrate its caring nature and to help those in need," said Charlotte Nass, an AmeriCorp graduate assistant from Davie, Fla., and project coordinator.
The "Gather the Gifts" day will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 7 in the University Union's Lobby and Room 206. Collected gifts will be delivered later in the day to the Salvation Army for distribution.
