SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University will commemorate Veterans Day 2009 with a public observance at 11:11 a.m. Wednesday at the University's Veterans Memorial. U.S. Army Maj. Patrick Callahan will be the speaker.

The memorial is located just west of the Russell Wright Alumni House and Conference Center and was a gift to the University from the classes of 1951, 1952 and 1953. The memorial was dedicated in 2003.

The SRU Alumni Association is sponsoring the event.

Callahan, chair of SRU's Army ROTC program for the past two years, is a 20-year Army veteran who has served in Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Egypt, England, German and various locations in the U.S.

As part of the ceremony, Michael Saraka, SRU Alumni Relations director, will pay honors to SRU students currently serving in the military.

Cadets in SRU's Army ROTC program will serve as an honor guard and raise the flags followed by a three-gun salute.

Refreshments will follow in the alumni house.
