SRU international students shine spotlight on home countries

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's annual Internations Week, which traditionally ends with the sell-out "International Dinner" featuring foods from around the world, opens Sunday. The event offers the campus and local community the chance to learn firsthand about the chome countires of SRU international students.

"This is an annual program produced by the SRU Internations Club that allows our international students the chance to tell the local community about their home countries, including details about their most popular sports, their politics and government operations, their clothing fashions, coffees and teas, and, of course, their food," said Kelly Slogar, coordinator of international recruitment and admissions and one of the week's organizers.

"This is truly an opportunity to showcase our international program, which this year has students from some 40 countries enrolled in classes. We believe the international program is important because it allows our American students to share their customs, beliefs and history with those from other nations while simultaneously being exposed to international students sharing their customs, traditions and histories. It is a great way to increase learning for all concerned and a great way for students to understand the necessities and benefits of multiculturalism," she said.

The week begins with "International Sports Night" at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Robert N. Aebersold Student Recreation Center with international students showing off badminton and hurling among other sports popular in their nations.

Monday at 8 p.m. in the University Union students will display clothing that is popular in their home country as part of an "International Fashion Show."

An "International Showcase and Coffee House," featuring various coffees and teas from international students' home countries along with discussion of language, customs, fashion and culture is at noon Tuesday in the Lillian Yartz Fireside Lounge of North Hall.

An "International Roundtable" with economic and political presentations is at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the University Union's Room 206.

Throughout the week SRU's international students will be working with AVI Foodsystems, the campus contract food vendor, to prepare of delicacies and traditional food items from the student's home countries which will be served at the "International Dinner" Nov. 14 in the University Union.

"In preparing for this event, some students have asked their parents for family recipes for their favorite foods so they can share them with the campus. Such items as akoko-do-do, yaki-sorba and kimbap are on the menu, along with such well-known favorites as shepard's pie and jerk chicken," Slogar said.

Tickets to the dinner are $20 for the general public; $10 for SRU students; and $6 for those under age 12. Tickets may be purchased in the International Services Office of Carruth Rizza Hall.
