WIDE AWAKE: The third annual "Up 'til 2 for St. Jude" event opens at 8 p.m. today and continues until 2 a.m. Saturday in the Robert N. Aebersold Student Recreation Center. The event offers a night of music, live performances, entertainment, games, prizes and food while working to increase awareness of and raise funds for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. A letter-writing campaign is a part of the event and participants are asked to bring 35 names and addresses. Pre-written letters asking friends and family to make donations to St. Jude will be provided. Last year's program raised more than $19,000 for the hospital. The two-year total is more than $40,000. Registration is $5 per person and team registration, including students, faculty and staff, is encouraged. The registration fee goes to St. Jude. Register online at: http://www.myuptildawn.org. ALWAYS REMEMBER: Today is the deadline for registering to attend the Chad Williamson Memorial Scholarship Competition. The competition is at 4 p.m. Nov. 14 in Swope Recital Hall and will showcase the talent of Slippery Rock University's vocal students.
FINDING AID: SRU's Office of Financial Aid will offer a free, public presentation "Understanding Financial Aid for College" from 1-2 p.m. Saturday in the Advanced Technology and Science Hall Auditorium. The session will give high school seniors, juniors and their families an overview of the types and sources of financial aid for college in addition to information about the application process.
INTERNATIONS WEEK: International Sports Night is Sunday in the Robert N. Aebersold Student Recreation Center. The event opens Internations Week. An international fashion show is at 8 p.m. Monday in the University Union; the International Showcase and Coffee House is noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Lillian Yartz Fireside Lounge of North Hall; the International Roundtable is 12:30-2 p.m. Thursday in Room 206 of the University Union; and the 35th annual International Dinner is at 7 p.m. Nov. 14 in the University Union. PLAY IT AGAIN, AGAIN: The annual "Stadium Echoes" concert featuring selections played by the SRU Marching Pride at halftime football games in N. MEMORIAL PLANNED: A memorial service for Judy K. Scheidemantle, labor foreman in Slippery Rock University's facilities and planning department and a 2002 graduate who died Sunday, will be at noon Thursday in the Advanced Technology and Science Hall Auditorium. Scheidemantle died Sunday following a long battle with cancer. She was 58. She joined SRU as a groundskeeper in 1990 and earned her degree in counseling. NO PARKING: The campus is reminded that no overnight parking (2 a.m. to 5:30 a.m.) is permitted from Nov. 1 to April 1 in the Russell Wright Alumni House and Conference Center Commuter Parking Lot, the staff and commuter McKay Education Building parking lots, the University Union Commuter Parking Lot, Founders Hall Lower Commuter Parking Lot, the Swope Music Building Commuter Parking Lot or the Physical Therapy Building staff and commuter parking lots to allow for snow removal. The SRU Parking Office also reports that a number of student and staff parking permits have not yet been picked up and drivers could face a $50 fine for violating parking permit rules.
OPEN ENROLLMENT: The "Flexible Spending Account Open Enrollment for 2010," offered by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, is open through Nov. 13. The plan, which covers the 2010 calendar year, allows PASSHE employees to set aside tax-free money for medical and dependent care for out-of-pocket expenses. Monies earmarked for the account may be used to cover office visit co-pays, prescription drug co-pays and many over-the-counter medications such as pain relievers, antacids, allergy medication and cold medicines. Campus Notes - 2SECA DONATIONS: Contributions to SECA (State Employees Combined Appeal) will be accepted through Monday. The current contribution total is $20,084 toward our 2009 goal of $26,195. Information and pledge forms were e-mailed Wednesday. The "Care Enough to Share" campaign is being led by Robert Smith, SRU president, who is also chairing the statewide drive for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. HOLIDAY LEAVE: Slippery Rock University will be closed Thursday, Nov. 26, and Friday, Nov. 27 for the Thanksgiving holiday. The day after Thanksgiving is designated as a "floating" minor holiday for AFSCME represented employees only. AFSCME employees will not be charged annual or personal leave for this day if absent from work, however, they must complete a leave slip indicating "H" for holiday. AFSCME employees who work Nov 27 must take a day off within 90 calendar days. All other employees must use available personal or annual leave for the day after Thanksgiving. Employees planning to work Nov. 27 must make prior arrangements with their supervisor so work assignments may be made. The University will be closed Dec. 25-Jan. 1, with employees using major and minor holiday leave earned during 2009. Employees are reminded that because the 2009 Martin Luther King Jr. holiday was celebrated as a major holiday, employees must submit a leave request or request leave without pay for Dec. 28.

SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE: Applications are due Monday for the SRU Chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Lucille Calabretta Scholarships. Scholarships of $750, $300 and $200 will be announced Dec. 11. Calabretta was the chapter's president. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, Pennsylvania resident, a fulltime SRU student with sophomore, junior or senior standing and a 2.5 grade point average or above. BLOOD DRIVE: A blood drive in honor of Miranda Lindenberg, daughter of Kelly Lindenberg, assistant professor of physical therapy, will be noon to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the University Union. Central Blood Bank will collect the blood.

VETERAN'S DAY: A Veteran's Day memorial will be at 11:11 a.m. Wednesday in front of the Russell Wright Alumni House and Conference Center sponsored by the SRU Alumni Association. The ceremony will take place at the SRU Alumni Veteran's Memorial. Light refreshments will be served in the Alumni House.
THE DEADLINE: The deadline for withdrawing for full semester course and receiving a grade of "W" is 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
OUTSTANDING TEACHING: The deadline for nominations for the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching has been extended to Wednesday. ALL MOZART: Warren Davidson, SRU music instructor, will present a series of five recitals offering all of Mozart's sonatas for violin and piano. The pianist will be Donna Amato. The recitals are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, March 17 and May 5 in Swope Music Hall. Admission is $5 for the general public, with proceeds benefiting SRU music scholarships. Campus Notes - 3DANCES, ARTIFACTS AND STORIES: The President's Commission on Race and Ethnic Diversity in collaboration with the Council for Three Rivers American Indian Center presents SRU's annual Native American Celebration Day Thursday. COLORFUL LANGUAGE: Tom Ferraro, an artist from Erie and owner of 1020 Holland Street, an industrial artist space, will lecture about his life as a painter at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the Art Building. Ferraro is co-president of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Artists Association and a member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh.

FUN FOR ALL: The SRU women's lacrosse team will host a "Kid's Fun Night" from 6-9:30 p.m. Nov. 20 at Morrow Field House. Children between the ages of 5-12 are welcome. AMERICAN CELEBRATION: In honor of Veteran's Day, the Slippery Rock University Brass Ensemble will present a program of music about America written by American composers at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 22 in Swope Music Hall. The program includes works by John Williams, Charles Ives, James Curnow, Morton Gould and Pittsburgh-area composers Robert Bernat and Drew Fennell. The ensemble is directed by Brian Meixner, assistant professor of music.

SISTERS UNITE: The Sisters in Healthcare Project, organized by SRU's John Bavaro, associate professor of professional studies, will be displayed in the Martha Gault Art Gallery through Nov. 20 during regular gallery hours noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The project consists of a traveling exhibit featuring stories, photos, documents, artifacts and historical clothing that showcase the significant contributions made by 16 orders of Roman Catholic sisters to the healthcare history of western Pennsylvania from 1847-1969.
REGALIA SALE: The SGA Bookstore, located in the University Union, is offering Oak Hall Cap and Gown regalia at a 10 percent discount through Nov. 30. Faculty and staff may receive the discount on regalia purchases. The advantages of owning commencement regalia include no longer having to order and return items, custom tailoring service and tax deductions for the purchase price.

FRAUDULENT E-MAIL: The Slippery Rock University campus community is reminded to be vigilant about ongoing fraudulent e-mails. Anyone receiving a suspect e-mail should immediately delete it. No further action is necessary. Do not respond to the e-mail. All Slippery Rock University approved mass e-mails have "SRU Communication" or "Office of the President" as the sender. E-mail users will never be asked to provide passwords or other personal information via e-mail response. The same applies to banks, credit card accounts, utilities and every other legitimate e-mail user. Caution should always prevail when being asked to provide passwords or PINs to outside sources via e-mail.
