SRU approaches 'Yes we can' stage
in statewide 2009 SECA drive

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University is at the "Yes we can" stage in its 2009 State Employee Combine Appeal with $19,463 contributed toward the $26,195 goal.

To date 66 SRU employees have donated or made a pledge to SECA, the only charitable campaign allowed by the commonwealth of Pennsylvania in its office statewide.

The drive allows all Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education employees, and those employed by other state offices, the opportunity to contribute to a variety of charitable agencies, organizations and funds through payroll deduction, cash or check contributions, or as a one-time, credit card charge. The yearly drive means minimal workplace disruption and administrative costs.

Robert Smith, SRU president, is this year's campus and PASSHE chair.

"The SECA drive is important because it can and does provide services to so many people in need. In fact, some in our own University family have received help from some of the agencies our employees have chosen to support," he said. The annual drive allows contributors to select from a wide variety of charities and service organizations, including a number in Butler County.

"In this time of economic uncertainty, I realize that budgets are tight. Still, I urge everyone to think about those who are less fortunate who are also facing tough times. I urge everyone to contribute whatever they can to help our University reach its goal. If everyone pitches in, I know we can reach our goal."

This year's theme is "Care Enough to Share."

Statewide, $4,267,167 was raised in 2008, surpassing the $4,258,399 goal. The drive was open to all 104,528 state employees, with 30,267 (29 percent) participating. SRU raised $24,947 last year.

Participating umbrella organizations and funds involved in the program are Community Health Charities of Pennsylvania, Wildlands Conservancy, Christian Service Charities, Independent Charities of America, the United Negro College Fund, United Ways of Pennsylvania, Global Impact and America's Charities.

In total, 1,400 agencies are participating in this year's campaign.

The SECA campaign, established in 1977 allows contributors to directly select which agency will receive their donation. In last year's campaign, 95 percent of the donors earmarked their funds for specific agencies listed in the brochure.

A brochure is available at: http://www.seca.state.pa.us. The booklet lists all charities and agencies that can receive funds from SECA.

The 2008 report showed 6.5 percent of the donors gave at the suggested level of .6 percent of annual salary. Ninety-five percent of donors used payroll deduction to complete their gift.

All SRU employees have been sent information packets that provide complete details on the drive, but additional information may be obtained by calling the Office of Human Resources at 724.738.2070.
