SAFE CAMPUS: (From left) Dave Hochendoner, chief technology officer for Metis Secure Solutions, and Clay Fulton, project manager for InterTECH Security, mark the location Wednesday for one of the new "Call for Help" emergency notification systems that will be installed in Slippery Rock University's 15 academic buildings. Hochendoner said 170 call boxes will be installed, each equipped with technology enabling students to automatically request help from police. Metis manufactured the system. InterTECH will begin installing the system before spring semester begins.

SRU's Adapted Physical Activity Day advocates inclusion for everyone

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University will offer an Adapted Physical Activity Awareness Day Nov. 11 to advocate the importance of including those with disabilities in adapted physical activity sessions in educational and community-based settings. The free program, from noon to 8 p.m, will include information booths, student-led activity demonstrations, a T-shirt giveaway, lunch on the Quad, wheelchair sports and more.

"One of the most important civil rights movements in the world is providing physical activity opportunities for people with disabilities," said Robert Arnhold, SRU professor of exercise and rehabilitative sciences and awareness day coordinator. "We want to let people know that people with disabilities aren't necessarily ill or generally sickly. People with disabilities participate in physical activity like anyone else and can be healthy and productive. Those individuals we serve work with Slippery Rock University students in recreation, swimming, rock climbing, fitness, physical education and horseback riding." Read More

ESS expansion adds online leave option

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Requesting or tracking vacation, days off, sick days or other leave will soon be just a few clicks away when Slippery Rock University's Office of Human Resources fully implements a new segment of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Employee Self-Service online program.

"The first phase of the ESS system went into use several months ago, and we are already piloting a new portion of the program with selected offices on campus as a way of working out the kinks before the system is fully implemented campuswide," said Marcia Kotek, benefits and transactions manager in SRU's Office of Human Resources. "We will bring offices and departments online gradually and when the entire process is completed, we will completely eliminate the need to fill out the traditional paper leave slips." Read More
